Helpful Hints / Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add / update / delete / import?
How do I find / access my bookmarks?
How do I use categories?
How do I manage my login / password / account information?
How do I add bookmarks to my collection?
In the upper left corner of the page, type the website address (for example:  www.July4.net).  Do not type the http:// portion.  Type a brief description of the website; each word in your description is indexed (except for a few common words). Click Quick Add.

OR click Add Detail. You may then include the bookmark in one or two categories (this is a replacement for folders in some other bookmarking schemes).  Select a pre-existing category that you have already created, by choosing one from the list.  Or create a new category by typing a category title in the box.  Click Add.

How do I update a bookmark description?
In the list of bookmarks, click the U/D button next to the bookmark entry.  Then edit the description and click Update.
How do I delete a bookmark from my collection?
In the list of bookmarks, click the U/D button next to the bookmark entry.  Then click Delete.  Note:  this deletes the bookmark, including all index lines for that bookmark (not just the index line that you started from).  Also, note that the delete cannot be undone.
What is a comment?
For each bookmark, you may enter a Comment in addition to the Description. The words in the Comment are not indexed.
How do I import my existing bookmarks?
First, get your current bookmark file:
  • In Netscape:  click Bookmarks, then Edit Bookmarks...  Then, click File, Save As...  Save the bookmarks to a file.
  • In Internet Explorer:  click File, then Import and Export...  Then follow the directions to export the favorites to a file.
Now, click Import in the upper right corner of your Bookmarks page.  Enter the file name and click Upload.
What happened to the folders in my existing bookmarks?
When you import your existing bookmarks, the first two levels of folders are converted into category names.  If you have more than two levels of folders within folders, the additional folder names are tacked on to the bookmark description (with asterisks to help designate them).  You might want to rearrange your bookmarks before importing so that you have at most two levels of folders.

How do I find a bookmark?
In the middle of your Bookmarks page, type the first few letters of the word you want to search for, then click the Go button.  Or click one of the letter buttons (A to Z) to go to the beginning of that section of the index.  Or click TOP to go to the top of the index.  (Note that index entries starting with numbers or special characters appear at the top of the index before letter A.)
How do I go to one of my bookmarked websites?
Click Go just to the right of the bookmark index entry in the list.
How is the index organized?
The index consists of one index entry for each word in each bookmark entry (except for a few short common words).  For example, if you had 100 bookmarks with a four-word description for each bookmark, there would be 400 index lines in your list.  The index entries are sorted alphabetically, with numeric and special character entries appearing at the top of the list.

The alphabetized words appear in boldface in the middle of the line.  Any words that are before the indexed word in the description appear to the left of the indexed word, and any words that follow appear to the right.  (In other words, the description reads from left to right, just like you would expect!)  For example, if your description for a website is "my very favorite website," you would see the following index entries:

my very favorite website
  my very favorite website
my very favorite website
my very favorite website

For a bigger example, with several bookmarks, see the Example Page, or just try experimenting with it to see how it works!

The following common words are not indexed:  the, to, of, and, for, a, on, in, by, at.

What is a category?
Bookmarks may be placed into categories, which are similar to folders in many bookmarking systems.  (Unlike folders, however, there are no categories within categories.)

Each bookmark can be placed in up to two categories.  Category names appear in italics, before the description, in the index lines on your bookmarks page.

How do I create a category?
To create a new category, type the category name in the "new category" box when you add or update a bookmark.  The new name will then appear in the category list for future updates and adds.  Note: do not select a category from the "category #2" list if you are creating a new category.
How do I change (or remove) the categories associated with a bookmark?
In the list of bookmarks, click the U/D button next to the bookmark entry.  Then change the category by picking a new entry from the list, or typing a new category title, or selecting (No Category) from the list.  Then click Update.
What is the Shortcut category?
If you choose the special Shortcut category from the list of categories, the bookmark will appear at the top of the page of bookmarks. You may wish to use this for a small number of frequently used bookmarks.

You can give the bookmark a Shortcut Name; if you do not, the Description is used as the shortcut name.

How many bookmarks do I have in my collection?
The total number of bookmarks is indicated in the upper right corner of your bookmarks page.  This also shows the number of index lines in your collection.
How do I change my password or e-mail address?
Click the Account Info button in the upper right corner of your Bookmarks page.  On the Account page, you can change your password, update your e-mail address, or terminate your account.
Can I access my bookmarks without having to login every time?
Yes.  When you login, click Save ID and password..., your ID and password are saved in a "cookie" on your PC.  Then make the following page your home page:  www.July4.net/my.html.  Your bookmark page will load automatically when you start your browser.
